IPL 2020 – Weekly Summary (Week 43)

Hello everyone, welcome back to the weekly analysis of the Indian Premier League. We will analyze the performances of the IPL matches played between October 17 to 23 in this article.  Every team is looking to put their best foot forward in the competition to qualify for the play-offs. We were treated with three super overs on the super Sunday this week with two super overs coming in the same match for the first time in cricket history. Bowlers started a mark in the tournament with 180-run mark breached only once in 18 innings this week.

All the top 4 teams Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Kolkata Knight Riders held onto their position in the top half of the points table. Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab are breathing down the neck of the Kolkata Knight Riders very closely in the points table. Rajasthan Royals are hanging on the cliff with their play-off chance still in contention. CSK has been pushed deep inside the well with some unrealistic mathematical chances probabilities to qualify.

Let us have a small discussion about the progress of the each team and Their form and progress they have made in this week.

Mumbai Indians won one and lost one match this week.  Their loss came in a dramatic double super over contest against KXIP. Quinton De Kock was the star with the bat this week scoring 53 & 46* in the two matches. Ishan Kishan Kieron Pollard continued their good form with the bat while skipper Rohit Sharma missed their last match due to injury concerns. Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult made a mess of the CSK`s batting line-up last match. Rahul Chahar is hitting form at the right moment claiming 5 wickets in the two matches played this week. MI looks unstoppable at the moment.

Delhi Capitals looked little rusty this week with a win and a loss. Shikhar Dhawan announced himself with two back-to-back centuries in the two matches. Axar Patel`s showcased his all-round skills against CSK to help his team win with the bat. Rishab pant returned to playing XI after missing a couple of matches.  Kagiso Rabada and Ravi Ashwin continued their good work with the ball while Daniel Sams got a game time in place of fiery Anrich Nortje. Delhi`s bowling looks rock solid and they need to plug their holes in the middle order in batting.

Royal Challengers Bangalore won both their matches this week comfortably by 7 & 8 wickets respectively. They needed an AB special to seal the tense chase against RR while KKR were blown away by their bowling unit in the last game. Mohammed Siraj was the star of the week for his figures of 4-2-8-3 against KKR. Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal were amongst the runs in the batting while Yuzi Chahal and Chris Morris continued their good showing in the bowling department. RCB has a very well balanced and settled playing XI at the moment.

Skipper Morgan scored a couple of 30s while their batting unit was very abysmal in their performance this week. They registered the lowest score of 84/8 this season. They unleashed Lockie Ferguson who helped them to win a super over contest against SRH as he rattled the stumps at will.  Their campaign is on a downslide and the next teams are breathing down their neck closely. They must to continue winning matches continuously to stay in the top-4. KKR missed the services of their star players Sunil Narine and Andre Russell this week.

Sunrisers Hyderabad look rejuvenated this week with a spring in their performances. Manish Pandey`s match winning 84 runs will be their standout performance of the week. Jason holder played his first game and straightway made an impact with 3 wickets. Vijay Shankar has started to make his presence felt in both batting and bowling departments. Rashid Khan continued his good form with the ball while T Natarajan went for 40+ runs in both the matches played this week. Kane Williamson suffered a quad injury and missed the last game for them.

Kings XI Punjab are on a roll as they beat top placed DC & MI in this week. They won the double super over contest against MI on the back of Mohammed Shami`s heroics with the ball. Skipper KL Rahul and Nicholas Pooran scored fifties to help their team win matches while Chris Gayle and Deepak Hooda made their presence felt with the bat. Maxwell bowled 8 overs in 2 matches giving runs at just 6.5 RPO this week. Their bowling is looking a little bit settled but needs few more jinks to be fixed. KXIP will be high confidence after their comeback in the second half of the tournament.

Rajasthan Royals defeated CSK on the back of Jos Buttler’s match winning 70* runs. They must look to rethink their batting line-up with ben Stokes struggling to time the ball at the top.  Samson might move to the top while Smith and Stokes at No.3 & No.4 looks a better option. Spinners Rahul Tewatia and Shreyas Gopal performed well with the ball in hand. Jofra Archer was excellent with the ball in both matches giving runs at less than 5 RPO and claiming important wickets. RR need to win all their remaining matches and hope other results go their way to qualify for the play-offs.

CSK lost all their 3 matches this week and are almost out of contention in the paly-off race. They lost their match against DC with their premium death bowler unavailable with 17 runs required for the opposition. DJ Bravo has left IPL2020 owing to injury and will no longer take part. MS Dhoni`s ‘no spark’ comment on CSK youngster`s made a huge controversy but they failed to justify their selection. CSK batting succumbed to two below par scores and their bowlers were did not have realistic chances in both matches. Imran Tahir played his first match against MI last night.
