LANKA PREMIER LEAGUE 2020

Greetings & good day to all my readers!!! Cricket is back on the field is all set to have a busy schedule in both the domestic leagues and international calendar. It is one of the enjoyable and tough times being a cricket fan consistently switching between different matches every day. Lanka Premier League (LPL) was set to be launched in August 2020 by the Sri Lankan Cricket Board (SLC) after the huge success of T20 leagues across different nations, but the COVID-19 pandemic halted the proceedings. After a lot of changes and considerations, Lanka Premier League is all set to kick off on 26-November 2020 with 5 teams. The final is scheduled to be played on 11-December-2020.
SLC Super Provincial T20 was the T20 tournament conducted by SLC from 2008 to 2016 before the Lanka Premier League. It did not follow the franchise-based model for the teams. They tried to replace the domestic tournament with different league formats such as Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) in 2012, SLC Twenty tournament in 2017, and SLC T20 league in the 2018 season respectively. But, they failed to create interest among the public and were eventually shelled off after their first season. Finally, SLC adopted a franchise-based model with 5 teams based on the cities and adopted the LPL this year.
LPL 2020 Teams
The Lanka Premier League teams are formed based on their city`s as follows.
- Colombo Kings
- Dambulla Hawks
- Galle Gladiators
- Jaffna Stallions
- Kandy tuskers
Lanka Premier League adopted the draft system for picking up players by each team and it happened on 19 October 2020 after being rescheduled for a couple of times earlier. Every team is allowed to have a squad strength of 20 players with a maximum of 6 foreign players. As per the LPL rules, 4 foreign players may be allowed in the playing XI of the team in every match.
LPL 2020 Schedule
LPL 2020 is scheduled to have 23 T20 matches between 5 teams with 20 league games and 3 knock-out games including the grand finals. All 23 matches will be played at the same venue Mahinda Rajapaksa International stadium (MRICS) at Hambantota due to bio-bubble requirements. Earlier the matches were planned to be played at three venues namely Kandy, Colombo, and Hambantota. SLC allowed viewed at moving the league to either of Malaysia or UAE owing to their strict quarantine rules in place.
