Pakistan Super League 2020 (PSL 2020)

Pakistan Super League also called PSL 2020 is the domestic T20 competition conducted by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) annually from 2016.  PSL is scheduled to happen usually in the months of February and March every year. Currently, six teams are playing in the league but the league started with 5 teams in 2016 and was extended to 6 teams in 2018. Four seasons of PSL have been completed so far and the fifth season came to an abrupt halt at the end of the league stage due to the global pandemic. PSL 2020 season is expected to be back in action with 4 play-off matches scheduled between Nov 4 & Nov 17 at National Stadium, Karachi.  PSL has one of the highly watched T20 leagues across Pakistan for the past few years. 

PSL 2020 teams & history

Pakistan Super League was first started in the year 2016 by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The inaugural tournament was played between 5 teams that are based in the cities of Pakistan. The teams are not owned by private entities instead they are a single entity that is operated by the investors and shareholders. The six teams currently playing in PSL are as follows

  1. Islamabad United
  2. Karachi Kings
  3. Lahore Qalanders
  4. Multan Sultans
  5. Peshawar Zalmi
  6. Quetta Gladiators

Islamabad United became the inaugural champions in the year 2016. Peshawar Zalmi won the trophy in 2017 while Islamabad United once again won the trophy in the 2018 season. Quetta Gladiators won the trophy in the 2019 season. Multan Sultans was the last entrant in the PSL after they were added in the year 2018. Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalanders are the two inaugural teams that are yet to win the trophy so far.  

PSL 2020 Schedule

PSL 2020 was initially scheduled between Feb 20 to Mar 19 with 30 league games and 3 knockout games. But the tournament came to an abrupt halt on March 15 when the pandemic broke out across the world. The entire PSL took place in Pakistan in four different stadiums at Multan, Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Lahore. Currently the remaining matches are re scheduled as play-offs with all 4 matches expected to take place in Karachi between Nov 14 to Nov 17. 

Each team can have maximum squad strength of 18 players. A team can have 3- 4 foreign players in the playing XI as per the PSL rules. Some of the noteworthy international players in the PSL this season are Colin Munro, David Malan, Dale Steyn, Faf Du Plessis, Jason Roy, Imran Tahir, Moeen Ali, Alex Hales, and Carlos Brathwaite.

Let us have a look at the points table and standings of the team after the end of the league stage in PSL2020 below. Quetta Gladiators and Islamabad United are eliminated from the group stages while the remaining four teams are expected to play the play-offs.

MULTAN SULTANS

Multan Sultans dominated the entire season with 6 wins & 14 points from their 10 matches. Skipper Shan Masood leads the batting charts for the team with 253 runs while Sohail Tanvir and Imran Tahir feature among the top wicket-takers with 10 wickets each. They will face off against Karachi Kings in the Qualifier 1 game on Nov 14. They have an experienced T20 players with the likes of Imran Tahir, Shahid Afridi, Ravi Bopara, Moeen Ali, and Rilee Rossouw in their squad.

KARACHI KINGS

Karachi Kings had a good tournament with 5 wins and 4 losses in their 10 matches and finished the group stage with 11 points on the second position in the points table. They will face off against table toppers Multan Sultans in the Qualifier 1 game. Imad Wasim leads the side in the PSL2020 season. Babar Azam leads the batting charts with 345 runs at a strike rate of 123 with 3 half-centuries to his name. Pacers Mohammed Amir and Chris Jordan leads the bowling attack with 10 & 9 wickets respectively.

Lahore Qalanders won 5 matches and lost 5 matches in this season. They came back strongly to win 4 out of the last 5 matches to qualify for the playoffs. They will play against the Peshawar Zalmi in the eliminator match. The big-hitting duo of Chris Lynn and Ben Dunk lead the batting department with 250+ runs this season. Spinners Shahid Afridi and Samit Patel have picked up 13 & 9 wickets respectively. They will expect to continue their momentum despite the pandemic halt in the eliminator match.

Peshwar Zalmi squeezed into the top-4 courtesy of NRR despite losing their last 2 matches. They have 4 wins in their 10 matches and had a total tally of 10 points to their name. They will meet the Lahore Qalanders in the Eliminator match. Kamran Akmal is their highest run getter with 251 runs this season. Veteran pacer Wahab Riaz leads the pace attack with 11 wickets to his name. They have added the likes of Faf Du Plessis ahead of the paly-offs to strengthen their team.

QUETTA GLADIATORS – ELIMINATED

Quetta Gladiators bowed out of the tournament with just 4 wins in their 10 matches. They were tied on 9 points with Peshawar Zalmi but were knocked out due to the low NRR. They won 3 matches out of their first 4 matches but failed to win any of their next 5 matches and were pushed out of the play-offs in their title defense. Shane Watson was their best batsmen this season with 247 runs. Mohammed Hasnain is currently leading the wicket-takers list with 15 wickets but he will no longer take part in the tournament.

ISLAMABAD UNITED – ELIMINATED

Islamabad United took the wooden spoon this year as they managed to win just 3 matches out of their 10 league games. After winning 2 out of their first 3 matches they managed just a solitary win in their remaining 7 matches. Luke Ronchi and Shadab Khan played well with the bat scoring 266 & 263 runs respectively. Shadab Khan was the pick of bowlers too with 9 wickets to his name. This is the first time in 5 seasons they failed to qualify for the knockouts.

CONTROVERSY 

PSL 2020 faced a big controversy when an image resurfaced in social media in which a person was seen using the mobile phone in the dug-out. The infamous incident took place in the match between Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings. A member of Karachi Kings dug-out (later verified as manager by Coach Dean Jones) was seen using his mobile phone when their team was celebrating their victory. International Cricket Council (ICC) stated the PSL matches as domestic matches coming under the guidance of PCB and asked PCB to check into these matters.
