All you need to know about Shpaageeza League

Shpageeza tournament involves six franchises with international players as well as local players. You can find players from the national teams, from the ‘A’ team, players from the under 19 team, and also the elite players from the respective regions. The Shpageeza League is broadcasted live on one of the popular channels of Afghanistan namely, ‘1TV’. Moreover, the quality of broadcasting is always in high-definition. This allows people to enjoy the game and watch their national players from the comforts of their homes.

By franchising and marketing each team, the Shpageeza League is very-well commercialized. But do you know the ultimate goal behind this league? Well, this 12- day tournament’s main aim is to promote the sport, especially cricket in Afghanistan. Besides, it also aims at establishing peace through the medium of sport.

History Of Shpageeza Cricket League

Shpageeza League 2020 is as big in Afghanistan as IPL is in India

Titled as Shpageeza Cricket Tournament, this popular league started with five regional teams in 2013. The event was successfully hosted by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB). Spin Ghar Tigers became the first-ever champion of the league. Its format (20 overs match) made it popular among the fans as a match just finished within 3 hours.

In 2014, the second edition of the tournament was organized with the same number of teams from the five regions of the country. In this edition, Mis-e-Ainak won the title championship. Rokhan Barekzai was named the best bowler of the edition; Noor Ali Zadran won the tag of the best batsman, while Gulbadin Naib won the title of the Man of the tournament. Earlier, Shamshad TV used to telecast the matches. From 2014, that is, in the second edition of the league, matches were telecasted on 1TV.

As Afghanistan did not have a 50-over domestic tournament earlier, the ICC gave ‘List A’ status to the league from the 2017 season. However, later on, ICC classified the matches in the Shpageeza League as Twenty20. Therefore, it was only in 2017 that the Shpageeza League got the Twenty20 status.

What Is Shpageeza League 2020?

TheShpageeza League 2020 is the seventh edition of the popular Shpageeza League. The tournament format of the Shpageeza League 2020 is ‘Round-Robin’ and ‘Playoffs’.

Originally, the tournament was scheduled to be held from 13th to 25th September 2020 at the Kabul Cricket Stadium. Later, it was preponed one week earlier from the scheduled date. This was decided in order to avoid clashes with the biggest T20 tournament in the world – IPL (Indian Premier League), which had been also delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic halt.
